The MyLanguageLabs Faculty Advisor Program is a peer-to-peer mentoring program that partners experienced MyLanguageLabs users with new and potential users to further enhance their knowledge, skill and understanding of how to successfully integrate MyLanguageLabs in the classroom. Our Faculty Advisors (FAs) are committed to advancing the support for online learning and sharing their best practices with the MyLanguageLabs community.

  Maria Akrabova

  Coordinator, Basic-Intermediate Spanish

  A native of Bulgaria, Maria Akrabova received her M.A. in Hispanic Linguistics and Translation from Sofia University, and her Ph.D. in Latin American Narrative from the University of Kansas. Her M.A. thesis was in Applied Linguistics, and proposed a model for the use of Text Linguistics for lexical expansion at the intermediate-advanced levels; her Ph.D. thesis was rooted in genre theory. Before committing to life in the academe, she worked as translator-interpreter, specializing in book-length and film translations. Since receiving her first graduate degree, she has held a variety of teaching positions ranging from Visiting Instructor, Lecturer, Teaching Assistant, and Assistant Professor at five institutions on both sides of the Atlantic. As a result, she has experience teaching a wide variety of courses: from beginner to Master –level classes in language, literature and linguistics. During her time at the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures at Wichita State University, she became the recipient of the Mortar Board Award for Teaching Excellence (2009), and served for six years as Director of Graduate Studies, and four years as Associate Director of the Summer Program in Puebla (Mexico). After joining the Department of Modern Languages at MSU-Denver, she took over as Coordinator of the basic-intermediate Spanish program in support of the already strong departmental commitment to the effective use of instructional technology in the foreign language classroom.

  Kristy Britt

  Kristy is currently Course Coordinator of Introductory Spanish and has over twenty years of experience teaching, challenging, and motivating students to learn the Spanish language and study its cultures. Thirteen years of that experience has been at the university level teaching Spanish grammar, civilization, literature, conversation, composition, and phonetics in addition to supervising students abroad in San José, Costa Rica. Since becoming the Director of the Language Resource Center in 2003, she has become passionate about incorporating technology with learning. Recent professional activities include co-hosting IALLT 2009, International Association for Language Learning Technology, conference at Georgia State University in Atlanta and serving as Program Chair for IALLT 2011 conference at the University of California Irvine, and serving as Assistant Editor for Copy-Editing for the IALLT Journal. Currently Kristy is President of the South East Association for Language Learning Technology and Treasurer of IALLT. She has given presentations on the topics of language learning technology, consults on language center design, and works regularly with colleagues about learning and teaching with technology.

  Kristy has a Master's in Spanish from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish and English from the University of South Alabama. Her studies include an undergraduate semester abroad in Mexico City.

  Julia Bussade

  Julia Bussade is originally from the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and has been in Oxford, MS since 1994. In 1996, she started teaching Spanish and Portuguese at the University of MS in Oxford. Since 2007 she has been the Director of Spanish and Portuguese at Ole Miss, in a program with approximately 4,700 students annually and 20 instructors. She currently teaches one course of Portuguese for Spanish speakers.

  She holds a BA in Liberal Arts, an MA in English, an MBA with emphasis in Marketing, a Ph.D. in Education with emphasis in TESL.

  Besides working at Ole Miss, she is also an interpreter for the Federal Public Defender's Office in Oxford, MS, has her own translation company and a long term car rental business, catered for international scholars.

  Her main hobbies include playing volleyball, movie evenings with the family, watching soccer games, traveling and reading. She also enjoys being the webmaster for the Department of Modern Languages.

  María Lourdes Casas

  María Lourdes Casas received her MA and PhD in Spanish from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Currently she is an Assistant Professor at Central Connecticut State University where she teaches Spanish Language, Literature and Culture. She specializes in 19th and 20th century Spanish Literature and Culture. Her main research focuses on short novel collections in Spain from 1900-1936. She is also interested in Spanish Contemporary Cinema. She has published articles dealing with mass readership and the female characterizations in these collections. She is currently working in a book length project about one of these collections, La Novela Mundial. She is also co-author of two Spanish textbooks for High School level.

  As a language teacher she has taught a wide variety of courses, from elementary level to advanced composition and conversation. She is also the coordinator for Elementary Spanish sections at CCSU. MySpanishLab for Mosaicos is being used in all these sections.

  Marina de Fazio

  Marina de Fazio has been directing the Italian Program at the University of Kansas since 1994. She has extensive experience teaching Italian language, literature and culture, and directing study abroad programs in Italy. Before joining the University of Kansas, she taught Italian at the University of Notre Dame, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the University of Virginia. Her many interests include Medieval Italian literature, Italo Calvino, Italian film, and narratology. Her publications include articles on Dante’s Commedia and Boccaccio's Decameron.

  Hector Enriquez

  My name is Héctor M. Enríquez and I have been teaching Spanish, literature and culture in the Department of Languages and Linguistics at the University of Texas at El Paso for the last twenty four years. As an educator I am interested in pursuing my doctoral degree in order to improve my knowledge of teaching and learning and expand my pedagogical skills. Also I am interested in doing research on the field of teaching in order to be able to participate more actively in the innovation of methodologies and technology so I can improve the quality of education that is offered in our classrooms. As an educator, I am involved in different language-teaching textbook projects and at this point of my life I am ready to start a new stage, which is why I am extremely motivated to pursue my PhD on education.

  I am the co-author of Español escrito, a well-known book which teaches Spanish to native and heritage speakers. In recent years I have had the opportunity to present my published work at different universities nationwide and learn that there are many possibilities to improve education. Also I have had the opportunity to train instructors nationwide about how to teach Spanish not only at my university but also at Georgetown University (where I was invited by the National Learning Resource Center of Washington D.C.), the University of Houston and the University of Texas at Brownsville.

  I obtained a Masters Degree in Modern Languages; the PhD program will give me the opportunity to continue with my research in the field. I was in charge of the Study Abroad program for five years and I taught Spanish culture in Spain, taking students to Europe and traveling with them to teach them about Spanish culture.

  I have been working also as an administrator and I am currently in charge of the coordination of the Lower Division Spanish Classes of UTEP's Department of Languages and Linguistics. My duties include training instructors in how to teach Spanish and how to implement the best methodologies and teaching methods in the classroom.

  I am a national Faculty Advisor to train people in technology, specifically applied to language teaching through Pearson Education, the world's leading company in higher education publishing. I am actively involved in helping other language textbook authors to improve their texts and I have participated in projects such as MySpanishLab, an adaptable program of technology that is used to teach in the classroom and in on-line courses alike. I also have participated in the publishing of materials for well known books such as Civilización y cultura de EspaÑa, Anda, Tu dirás and others where I have had the opportunity to share my experience and knowledge in my field of teaching Spanish.

  I am a US citizen but I was raised in Cd. Juárez where I completed high school. I moved to El Paso in the early eighties and accomplished my goal to become an airplane pilot. I completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Texas at El Paso in Psychology and my Masters Degree in Modern Languages at the same institution.

  I have a happy family with five members—my recently-married daughter, two sons, a granddaughter and a lovely wife. I have an adopted son who graduated last year with a degree in Business Administration. I consider myself a successful person and during my life I have owned two businesses: International Language Consultants for more than ten years and Brasil Auto Center since 1999. I have the conviction that the only way to accomplish goals is through consistency and determination. I have learned to solve problems thanks to various life experiences and also because of the professional advice of people such as Dr. Richard Teschner, Dr. Arturo Pérez and so many others who have inspired me to be a better person. As part of my dream to help people to improve their life, I created two Endowments of Excellent at UTEP for the Department of Languages and Linguistics, Creative Writing and Women in Science.

  Josh Everett

  Mr. Everett received his BA in Spanish with honors from Louisiana Tech University in 2008 and his MA in Hispanic studies from Louisiana State University in 2010, focusing on colonial studies. He speaks English, Portuguese, and Spanish, and has considerable interpretation/translation experience, as well as work experience in veterinary medical interpretation/translation and bilingual tech support. He is currently the Director of the Language Resource Center and Associate Lecturer of Spanish at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse, where he trains the faculty of the Department of Modern Languages in the use of technology in their courses and serves as webmaster for the departmental website. In addition to his academic work, Mr. Everett is also the owner of a web design, translation, and tech support company.

  John Fields

  John Fields teaches at Florida State College at Jacksonville where he is a full-time professor of French as well as head of the French program. He also teaches humanities courses on France (Lieux de mémoire en France) and Paris (Paris: City of Light, City of Darkness) as well as business law courses as needed. In addition to his teaching role, he is also president of the Florida chapter for the American Association of Teachers of French, administrator of the National French Exam for high school students in Florida, and a judge at Congrès (state-wide French competition). Finally, he is active with the Jacksonville City Sisters Committee working with Nantes, France and Curitiba, Brazil.

  John graduated from the University of Florida with a B.A. and M.A. in French language and literature. In between earning his B.A. and M.A., he spent a year working in Nantes, France. He also graduated from Rutgers School of Law with a J.D. Since returning to teaching in 2002, he has taught at both the high school and college levels.

  Kerra Gazerro Hanson, Ph.D

  Kerra Gazerro Hanson received her Ph.D. from the Department of Romance Language and Literatures at the University of Chicago. She is extensively trained in didactic methodology and language pedagogy directed toward second language acquisition. She has held teaching appointments at the Ohio State University, The University of Chicago, Providence College and Wheaton College as well as the Università di Pisa. She has taught a variety of courses ranging from Elementary and Intermediate Italian to Advanced Conversation and Composition and Accelerated Italian. She has also designed several language and culture courses, including a Survey of Italian Literature and a course entitled "Constructing Italian Women Writers and Saints of the Middle Ages and Renaissance."

  Trained as a Medievalist, her research focuses on the writings of the Italian Women Mystics, specifically the Dominican tertiary St. Catherine of Siena. Her current projects also investigate the works of Sant'Agnese di Montepulciano, Vanna da Orvieto, Lucia Broccadelli, Caterina de'Ricci and Stefana Quinzani.

  She regularly attends and participates at local and national conferences in her discipline and her first publication is forthcoming in Italica in fall 2012.

  Caridad Jiménez

  Cari Jiménez is originally from Cuba. She moved to the United States with her family in 1982. She has a MA and BA in Spanish from Auburn University and University of Florida, and more than 12 years of teaching experience. Teaching Spanish is her passion; she sees herself as a facilitator and guide in her student centered virtual classroom. She enjoys working online and using the technology available to create an interactive and engaging learning environment.

  Valerie Job

  Valerie Job received her BA in Spanish, English, Elementary Education, and Secondary Education, with specializations in Reading, ESL and Bilingual Education from Wayland Baptist University in 1981, MA in Spanish and Psychology from Texas Tech University in 1992, and her PhD in Spanish from Texas Tech University in 2005. As a professional educator with more than 29 years of experience, she attends professional development conferences, training seminars and conducts research yearly to stay current regarding relevant developments in foreign language acquisition.

  On a professional level, she is a long-time a member of the South Plains Foreign Language Teachers' Collaborative and is their Foreign Language Festival Director, as well as their liaison to South Plains College. She has directed the Foreign Language Festival for 13 years, coordinates the annual summer workshop and administers the endowed scholarship. She is a member of TCCTA and TFLA and was the AATSP Llano Estacado Chapter secretary for 4 years, and served two year terms as Vice-president and President.

  Valerie taught kindergarten and second grade bilingual classes, all levels of secondary Spanish, including Advanced Placement and Honors classes, as well as all levels of Spanish at the post-secondary level for South Plains College, including dual credit and I-TV Spanish and was the Spanish dual credit liaison for South Plains College for several years. She created and teaches a Medical Spanish course, the Accelerated First and Second Year Spanish, and a Spanish course for educators. She generally teaches between 18 and 21 hours per semester, with a retention rate of 96%. Her student evaluations average 4.8 on a five point scale.

  In the community, she uses her language skills to translate the HIPPA for several of the area medical facilities, along with legal other documents such a real estate agreements and employee handbooks. She is married to Gary Merriman, and has a wonderful home and two incredible Westies, Bearette and Flurrie.

  Cheryl Johnson

  Cheryl Johnson received her BA in Anthropology from Kenyon College in 1981 and her MA in Spanish from the University of Kansas in 1985. She has years of experience teaching Spanish to middle and high school students as well as to college students. In 1996 she partnered with Professor Vicente Cantarino to create the CD-Rom Historia y cultura de España and currently maintains the companion website for his textbook, Civilización y cultura de España, 5/E, which is also a Pearson Ed product, at http://civycultura.osu.edu.

  Currently she is an instructional technologist for the Department of Modern Languages at Denison University in Granville, Ohio. She is in charge of supporting all the technological needs of the faculty and students in the department.

  She serves on the Ohio Foreign Language Association (OFLA) board as the Editor for Electronic Publications. In this role she not only maintains the organization's website but has also helped to move the organization into the realm of using digital online tools for tracking membership, conference registrations and sharing documents among board members.

  Dallas Jurisevic

  Dallas Jurisevic, Ph.D. received her BA in Spanish and Psychology from the University of San Diego. She spent a summer in a Spanish immersion program in Guadalajara, Mexico. During her undergraduate work, she was a TA for two years and received the Most Distinguished TA Award. She also did internships with the San Diego juvenile justice system and the San Diego City Attorney’s Office. In both internships, she worked as a Spanish-English translator-mediator. She began her graduate studies in Spanish at San Diego State University. She moved to Madrid, Spain where she participated in an immersion program in Spanish for graduate students through New York University. She graduated with her MA in Spanish Literature. Her thesis was on Three Latin American Women Writers and the Role of Magical Realism in Their Short Stories. Dallas Jurisevic returned to the US where she taught at the University of Kansas and Missouri Western State University. She then received her teaching certification and taught high school. After feeling the need to get back into higher education Dallas Jurisevic completed a PhD program at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in educational studies with her emphasis in teaching foreign language. Her dissertation was Student Achievement Using Web 2.0 Technologies: a Mixed Methods Study.

  Sarah Lawson

  Sarah Lawson received her BA in Spanish with two minors in History and Latin American Studies with Language Proficiency in 2006 from Arkansas Tech University. She received her MA in Spanish in 2009 from the University of Central Arkansas where she was a part time Spanish Instructor and a teacher for the UCA Community Language School and the local homeschool association. In 2008, Sarah was chosen to participate in a Fulbright-Hayes Seminar to Mexico. Sarah is currently an Adjunct Spanish Instructor at two universities, responsible for a total of 27 hours a semester. She is currently the founding Spanish Club Sponsor at the University Of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton. At Arkansas Tech University, she is the World Languages Lab Director, serving her second year as a member of the Ad-hoc Committee for Adjunct Support and President of the ATU chapter of Sigma Delta Pi-Psi Omicron.

  Kathryn Lorenz

  Kathryn Lorenz is a Field Service Associate Professor of French in the Romance Languages and Literatures Department at the University of Cincinnati. She also serves as Director of Curriculum for the Department and as Director of Language Instruction for McMicken College, Arts and Sciences. She is an affiliated faculty member with the College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services of the University as well. Her specialization for her PhD was in Medieval Comparative Literature and she now concentrates mainly on basic language instruction and language pedagogy.

  Timeko McFadden

  Timeko teaches Spanish at Tri-County Technical College in Pendleton, South Carolina. The language program at TCTC is hybrid-based and MySpanishlab is a requirement for students. She has also utilized the online program in a traditional format for three years. Timeko earned Bachelor's degrees in both Spanish and Religion at Converse College in Spartanburg, SC in 1998. She then completed her Master's degree in Hispanic Literature at the University of Georgia in 2000. She has experience in both K-12 and post-secondary language instruction and is a member of Alpha Gamma Mu. She has a particular interest in curriculum development and technology as well as facilitating articulation between secondary and post-secondary foreign language instruction.

  Mónica Montalvo

  Mónica Montalvo is originally from Puerto Rico. She moved to Orlando in 1998 to pursue her Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish and her Master of Arts degree in Spanish Literature from the University of Central Florida. After completing her MA degree, Mónica accepted a position as a Spanish instructor at UCF and has taught various levels since then. She developed the first year online Spanish courses for UCF, which she presently teaches, and oversees all the online Spanish sections. She is currently the lower level Spanish Coordinator for the Modern Language Department.

  I was born in Germany and studied French and History in Germany and France. Graduated from UCLA with a PhD in French Literature and currently work as Associate Professor of French and Language Program Director in the Department of Romance, German, Russian Languages and Literatures at California State University, Long Beach. I am responsible for the training and mentoring of approx. 30-35 Teaching Associates and part-time instructors and the coordination of the entire lower-division language program in French, German, Italian, Spanish, Arabic and Russian (and no, I do not speak all of those languages). My research interests are in foreign language teaching methodology and Second Language Acquisition.

  I am a contributing member of a project entitled French/Italian for Spanish Speakers which recently received a $100,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The project seeks to develop a new language teaching paradigm based on the Intercomprehension theory and method.

  Sandy Oakley

  Sandy Oakley has taught Spanish on all levels (elementary, secondary and post-secondary) during her career. She initiated the online Spanish program at Palm Beach State in 2004 (then Palm Beach Community College) with one online class which has grown to 16 classes per year.

  She has also been a contract instructional designer, primarily with Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, for the past twenty years where she continues to develop web based training.

  She has an AA from Palm Beach Junior College, BA from Florida State University and an MA from Emory University. She and her husband, Jesse, live in Tequesta, FL with their three rescued dogs - two Weimaraners and a Jack Russell. They have one daughter, Jessica, 24.

  Élodie Goodman is a true intercultural personality; born while her family fled Communist rule in Vietnam, raised in France, and educated in the United States. A US citizen, Élodie is keenly interested in all things American and loves to infuse her varied interests with her own particular French cachet. She is especially drawn to US military and intelligence history and tactics. She is as happy at the pistol range as she is conjugating irregular French verbs or throwing chalk at her students.

  Élodie earned her BA in French literature at the University of Washington. She also earned her MA from the University of Washington, while teaching undergraduate French classes during her own graduate work.

  Élodie has been at SFCC for eleven years. She has also developed and taught a class on French Cinema, from its birth to the present, for Whitworth College, and developed an online Elementary French class using Pearson’s MyFrenchLab for Spokane Falls Community College. In addition to advising the French Club, Élodie works for SFCC's International Education Committee.

  Anne Prucha

  A 2005 and 2009 Teaching Incentive Program (TIP) award recipient from University of Central Florida, Anne Prucha has been actively involved in teaching, translating, writing and editing in English and Spanish on a variety of topics for the past 20 years. She has taught elementary, intermediate, advanced, conversational Spanish and Spanish composition and literature to college students, starting in 1987 at Rutgers University in New Brunswick; and since 1999 in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. At UCF Anne has been the Coordinator of Lower Division Spanish and has also acted as Faculty Coordinator of the Summer Study Program in Spain.

  I came on board to teach Spanish and coordinate the Spanish Program at Midway College in Midway, Kentucky in the fall of 2008. Prior to this, for 15 years, I taught Spanish at Bluegrass Community and Technical College in Lexington, Kentucky. I received a BA in Spanish from the University of Southern Indiana in 1986 and a Masters degree in Spanish from the University of Kentucky in 1989. Also, I currently work as an independent contractor teaching online Spanish for Kentucky Virtual Schools and serving as a proof reviewer and faculty advisor for Pearson. I have also home-educated my four children for over 15 years, and I currently serve as Program Director for Capital Area Christian Homeschoolers Academic Enrichment Program in Frankfort, Kentucky.

  Dr. Ouafaa Zouali

  Old Dominion University

  Dr. Ouafaa Zouali was born in Morocco. She completed her Bachelor's degree in French Linguistics in 1992, followed by a Master's degree in Linguistics in 1995, and a Ph.D. in Social Psychology of Language in 2004 at Laval University (Quebec, Canada). Her area of expertise deals with language use in intercultural environments. She published several articles dealing with language attitudes, language uses and identity of minority and majority groups living in Canada. She is currently teaching French as a second language at Old Dominion University's Foreign Language Department and Intercultural Communication for the English Department.
